About this postcard
A father sent this embossed greeting to Berdina Reeder in Summer Lake, Oregon, in 1910, signing the message "Daddy." The design is the phrase "TO MY PET" in raised gold letters with small flower and leaf sprigs on a mottled blue and teal ground. Cards of this kind were sold as general affectionate greetings rather than for a specific holiday, and the deep die-pressed gold relief was the selling point. German and American firms produced large quantities of such embossed novelties in the first decade of the 1900s. The card traveled from Bend into Lake County, a sparsely settled ranching area of central Oregon. For a recipient in Summer Lake, a small community far from the city, a gilt greeting from her father would have been a personal token.
