About this postcard

Workers in broad-brimmed straw hats stand among rows of broad-leaved tobacco plants in a large field, with a tree line along the horizon. The printed caption places the scene "in the tobacco fields of old Virginia," near Lynchburg. Lynchburg, on the James River, was a leading tobacco market and manufacturing center in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the surrounding Piedmont counties grew much of the leaf. The crop appears late in the season, before topping and harvest.
