The view looks up a narrow, steep-walled rock gorge, with a stream tumbling over ice-covered boulders in the foreground and conifers clinging to the slopes. The scene is Toltec Gorge, a canyon in the San Juan Mountains of southern Colorado, cut by the Rio de los Pinos near the New Mexico line. In the early 1900s the Denver & Rio Grande's narrow-gauge San Juan Extension ran through the gorge, and the railroad's passage along the rock wall made it a noted scenic stretch of mountain travel.
