A view up a narrow, steep-walled rock gorge with a stream tumbling over ice-covered boulders in the foreground and scattered conifers clinging to the slopes. The printed caption names it Toltec Gorge, a dramatic canyon in the San Juan Mountains of southern Colorado, carved by the Rio de los Pinos near the New Mexico line. The gorge is best known as the route of the Denver & Rio Grande's narrow-gauge San Juan Extension, whose Toltec Tunnel and high bridge made it one of the most celebrated mountain rail passages in the West.
