Across a pond, a terraced hillside rises with clipped evergreens, a white balustrade and urns along the water, and a small open pavilion above. The scene is Hunnewell Gardens in Wellesley, Massachusetts, where Horatio Hollis Hunnewell developed an Italianate terraced garden and pinetum from the mid-nineteenth century. The formal plantings and topiary made the grounds a local showplace and a familiar subject for early twentieth-century postcards.
Narrow white border; small circular "M&Co" monogram printed in lower left corner; slight edge and corner wear; message written in pencil. Postmark: BOSTON NOV 12 10-PM 1906 MASS. / BACK BAY STATION 2 (plus receiving mark AMESBURY NOV 13 8-30A 1906 MASS.). Undivided back with "IN SPACE BELOW MAY BE WRITTEN SENDER'S NAME AND ADDRESS (NO OTHER WRITING)" notice; colored halftone print with white border; light edge wear and slight soiling.
