About this postcard

A view across a pond toward a terraced hillside of clipped evergreens, with a white balustrade and urns along the water's edge and a small open pavilion on the rise above. These are the Hunnewell Gardens of the Hunnewell estate in Wellesley, Massachusetts, laid out from the mid-nineteenth century by Horatio Hollis Hunnewell, who assembled an Italianate terraced garden, a pinetum and an extensive collection of conifers and topiary work. The gardens were a well-known local showplace and a frequent subject for postcards of the era.
