About this postcard
A logger works high on the trunk of a giant spruce, cutting away the 65-foot top to leave a 200-foot mast. The tree stands 265 feet tall, with smaller evergreens in the foreground and a blue sky with pink-tinged clouds behind it. The scene reflects the scale of Pacific Coast old growth: forests along the Oregon and Washington coasts held trees 300 to 400 feet high and up to 500 years old. Mast timber was a specialized product cut from tall, straight conifers, and topping such trees was dangerous, skilled work.
