A wooded tourist campground in Ontonagon, Michigan, with two canvas tents pitched among tall pines. A man in shirtsleeves bends over a camp stove or box beside a wooden picnic table, with a water pump or post nearby. Ontonagon sits on Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and the scene reflects the simple roadside camps that auto tourists used in the 1930s, when travelers often pitched tents in tourist parks rather than staying in hotels.
