About this postcard
A pictorial auto map of Cape Cod, printed in red, yellow, and blue, lays out the peninsula from Bourne, Wareham, and Falmouth east to Hyannis, Yarmouth, Brewster, Orleans, and Provincetown, with the Cape Cod Canal, Buzzards Bay, Nantucket Sound, and Cape Cod Bay lettered in. Route 6 follows the north shore from Sagamore through Barnstable, Yarmouth, Brewster, and Orleans to Provincetown; Route 28 follows the south shore from Buzzards Bay through Falmouth, Hyannis, Harwichport, and Chatham to Orleans. Route 132 crosses at West Barnstable and Hyannis, and mileages between towns run along the margins. The map's text calls Cape Cod unique, counting fifteen towns, 143 villages, 586 miles of shoreline, 306 miles of beaches, 270 lakes and ponds, and 1,415 miles of macadam roads. The Cape Cod Canal, opened to shipping in 1914, had made the Cape an island for road travelers, and the map served the growing auto-touring trade along its two shore routes.
