A narrow granite spire called the Traffic Cop stands beside the Needles Highway in Custer State Park, one of the grotesque guardians the caption places near the Needles. Pines and other weathered rock pinnacles crowd the slope, and the paved road bends around the base. The Needles Highway was cut through the Black Hills granite in the early 1920s as a scenic motor route, with tight tunnels and spires that made it a signature drive in South Dakota's first state park.
