A leaf-strewn path runs through a stand of tall pines, with a lone figure in dark clothing paused among the trunks. Sunlight filters through the canopy of the Hartwick Pines near Grayling, a remnant of the old-growth white pine forest that once covered much of northern Michigan. By 1940 the stand was preserved as a state park and drew motorists touring the northern Lower Peninsula. The sender writes of traveling on to Traverse City.
