About this postcard

A sepia view shows a large crenellated brick building identified by the caption as the Waltham Training School for Nurses. A pointed-arch entrance, rows of shuttered windows, and two tall chimneys give the facade an institutional look. A curving path crosses a lawn with bare trees, and a smaller building and a conifer stand at the right. Nurse training schools of the early 1900s typically combined classroom instruction with practical work in hospital wards, and many housed their students in dedicated buildings. Waltham, a manufacturing city west of Boston, was home to one such school in the early 1900s.
