About this postcard

A pine tree grows from a cleft in a large boulder, ringed by an iron fence and marked by two signs, one reading "THE OLD PINE TREE" and one on a wooden frame reading "TREE IN THE ROCK." The printed caption calls it the famed landmark of the Lincoln Highway in Wyoming. Motorists crossing southern Wyoming on the Lincoln Highway, the country's first transcontinental auto road, treated the tree as a regular roadside stop. Ray and Lorraine Heist wrote to a friend in Reading, Pennsylvania, from their "expedition into the West," reporting a grand time and promising more word along the way.
