Tree-lined country road through alfalfa and cotton fields near El Paso, Texas, circa 1915

Printed photo

About this postcard

A broad, unpaved road runs straight away from the viewer beneath a double row of mature shade trees, with open fields and a few low farm buildings visible beyond the trunks. The printed caption names the scene as the country roads leading into El Paso, Texas, passing through alfalfa and cotton fields irrigated from the Rio Grande. Such irrigated farming in the El Paso valley depended on water diverted from the river, and the region became a major cotton and alfalfa producer in the early twentieth century.
