Triborough Bridge suspension span from Astoria, NY, circa 1936

About this postcard

An elevated view looks across the East River toward the Triborough Bridge's suspension span, its steel towers and cables rising beyond Astoria Park and the Queens waterfront. The printed caption places Hellgate Bridge to the right, where the railroad arch crosses near the bridge approach. The Triborough complex opened in 1936 to connect Manhattan, the Bronx, and Queens through a suspension span, a lift bridge over the Harlem River, and a truss span over the Bronx Kill. The card shows the new crossing in its early years, with the park and surrounding rooftops framing the view from Astoria.
