Trinity Building and Trinity Church, New York, circa 1905

About this postcard

The view pairs Trinity Church's Gothic Revival spire with the taller Trinity Building beside it in lower Manhattan. Elevated railway tracks and a small station fill the foreground, setting the church and office block against the transit lines of the city. Trinity Church is an Episcopal parish whose present building dates from the 1840s, when Richard Upjohn's Gothic Revival design replaced an earlier church. The Trinity Building was an early-1900s office block on parish land, a commercial neighbor beside the churchyard. The elevated tracks and station in the foreground belong to the era when elevated trains carried much of Manhattan's daily traffic.
