Triple Underpass to Uptown Dallas, Texas, circa 1936

About this postcard

Three arched openings carry Commerce, Main, and Elm streets beneath the Union Terminal railroad embankment west of downtown Dallas, with the city's office towers rising behind. The broad approach ramps converge in the foreground, and the streets funnel through the shadowed passages toward the business district. The underpass opened in 1936 as part of a grade separation project that lifted the rail line above the streets and created Dealey Plaza, the gateway to Union Station. It became one of the city's best-known landmarks, and in November 1963 the presidential motorcade passed through it on its way into downtown.
