Trumbull's Declaration of Independence, U.S. Capitol, circa 1901

Card type
Lithograph

About this postcard

John Trumbull's painting Declaration of Independence shows John Hancock seated at the president's table while the Committee of Five stands before him: Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert L. Livingston (likely Robert R. Livingston). The delegates fill a hall with green-draped tables and flags. The painting hangs in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol, Washington. Trumbull depicted the committee presenting the draft to Congress, a scene often confused with the signing. The work became one of the Capitol's best-known images of the Revolutionary era.
