Tunnel on Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park, VA, circa 1935

Card type
Linen

About this postcard

A stone-lined tunnel on Skyline Drive cuts through a rocky, tree-covered slope, with the paved road leading into the dark opening and a small patch of daylight visible at the far end. The printed caption describes the tunnel as an engineering work about six hundred feet long, near the Lee Highway entrance to the drive and at the top of the Blue Ridge. Shenandoah National Park was established in 1935, and Skyline Drive was built along the ridge in the 1930s as the park's scenic route, with tunnels carrying the road through the mountain.
