Tunnel on Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park, VA, circa 1935

About this postcard

The view looks through a stone-lined tunnel on Skyline Drive, with the road surface running into shadow and a small patch of daylight at the far portal. A rocky, tree-covered cut rises above the masonry entrance. The caption gives the tunnel's length as about six hundred feet and places it near the Lee Highway entrance at the top of the Blue Ridge. Skyline Drive was laid out in the early 1930s as a scenic road along the crest of the Blue Ridge, and its stone-faced tunnels and guard walls were built to fit the mountain terrain. Shenandoah National Park was established in 1935, and the drive became the park's main scenic route.
