Tunnel on Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park, Virginia, circa 1940

About this postcard

A stone-lined highway tunnel bores through a rocky, tree-covered slope, with the paved road of Skyline Drive leading into the dark opening and a small patch of daylight visible at the far end. Skyline Drive, the scenic ridge road through Shenandoah National Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains, was built in the 1930s and includes several such tunnels cut through the rock. The card's linen texture and white border place it in the mid-20th-century era of American roadside view cards.
