About this postcard
A stone-lined highway tunnel bores through a rocky, tree-covered cut along Skyline Drive, with the road surface and a glimpse of daylight at the far portal visible in the foreground. Skyline Drive, the scenic ridge road through Shenandoah National Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains, was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps and opened in stages before the park's dedication in 1936; its masonry tunnels and stone guard walls are characteristic of that Depression-era construction. The card's linen texture and caption style place it in the later 1930s-1940s.
