Tuscarora Mountain Tunnel on the Pennsylvania Turnpike at night, Pennsylvania, circa 1940s

Card type
Linen

About this postcard

Night view of the arched portal of the Tuscarora Mountain Tunnel, with an illuminated sign reading "TUSCARORA MOUNTAIN" mounted above the entrance and the roadway curving into the lit bore. The Tuscarora Tunnel was one of the original seven tunnels bored for the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which opened in 1940 as America's first long-distance rural superhighway, crossing the Allegheny Front between Carlisle and Pittsburgh. The card's photo credit to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission reflects the agency's own publicity views of the new road.
