Two men above the clouds, Asheville, NC, 1906

About this postcard

Two figures in dark coats and hats stand on a rocky ledge, looking out over a thick sea of clouds that fills the valleys below. Layered mountain ridges and a pinkish horizon rise beyond. The printed caption names the scene “Asheville, N.C., Above the Clouds,” a view from one of the high overlooks in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. Asheville was promoted in this period for its mountain air and scenery, and cloud inversions like this were part of the draw for tourists and health seekers. The exact summit is not identified on the card.
