U curve on US 50, Laurel Mountain, WV, circa 1926

About this postcard

The view looks along a hairpin U curve on Laurel Mountain, west of Macomber, where a paved road wraps around a large layered rock outcrop. A single vintage automobile is parked on the road at left, and a small road sign stands on the slope at right. The steep grade and exposed rock are typical of the mountain roads that carried travelers across the Alleghenies in the early automobile age. The route is labeled US 50, a federal designation that dates the scene to 1926 or later, when the numbered highway system took over older mountain roads. The parked car suggests a traveler paused on the climb, perhaps to take in the view.
