About this postcard

The view looks across the harbor at Woods Hole toward the U.S. buoy dock, a long, low white depot building with a dark roof on the shore. A schooner-rigged vessel and several small boats lie at moorings, and a plank float in the foreground is stacked with crates, spars, and gear beside a couple of rowboats. The U.S. Lighthouse Service maintained buoy depots where navigational buoys were stored, painted, and repaired before being placed on station. Woods Hole was also home to the Marine Biological Laboratory and the fisheries research station, so the small harbor combined scientific work with the everyday maritime traffic of Cape Cod's coast.
