U.S. Buoy Dock, Woods Hole, Massachusetts, circa 1910

About this postcard

The view looks across the harbor at Woods Hole, Massachusetts, toward the U.S. buoy dock: a long, low white depot building with a dark roof stands on the shore, a schooner-rigged vessel and several small boats lie at moorings, and a plank float in the foreground is stacked with crates, spars and gear beside a couple of rowboats. Woods Hole was the site of a U.S. Lighthouse Service buoy depot, where navigational buoys for the surrounding waters were stored, painted and repaired before being placed on station. The village was also home to the Marine Biological Laboratory and the fisheries research station, making the little harbor one of the busiest scientific and maritime corners of Cape Cod.
