About this postcard

The United States Capitol is shown in a monochrome view from the plaza, its dome rising above long columned wings and a broad flight of steps leading to the portico. A lamp post and shrubbery frame the foreground. The building was the seat of Congress and the most recognizable symbol of the federal government in Washington, D.C. By the early 1900s, the completed dome and expanded wings gave it the silhouette seen here, and the Capitol was a standard stop for visitors arriving in the capital by rail.
