About this postcard

An elevated view of the U.S. Congressional Library in Washington, D.C., its domed reading room rising between long classical wings, with landscaped grounds and curving drives in the foreground and a horse-drawn carriage on the road below. Rooftops and chimneys of the surrounding city fill the background. The building is the Thomas Jefferson Building, completed in 1897 as the library's first dedicated home after decades of crowding inside the Capitol. Its Beaux-Arts facade, arched entrance and tiled dome made it a familiar sight on Washington souvenir cards of the period, and the printed caption uses the name most Americans then knew it by, the Congressional Library. A brief line on the front, dated April 21, 1906, comes from the sender's mother.
