A black-and-white view of the U.S. Post Office and City Hall in Los Angeles. The post office's long facade and vertical window bays fill the left foreground, while the City Hall tower rises on the right. Cars and pedestrians are visible on the surrounding streets.
The sender, a sailor on a 52-hour liberty, wrote of a sunny day warm enough to shed peacoats. Los Angeles was by then a major aircraft manufacturing center, and the civic center stood at the heart of a city busy with wartime industry and military personnel.
