About this postcard

The card shows the U.S. Post Office and Custom House in Burlington, Vermont, a Classical Revival federal building whose granite front is articulated by a tall colonnade of columns above a rusticated base, with a neighboring brick building and its mansard-roofed tower rising at the right. Period automobiles are parked along the street in front. Burlington's federal building served both as a post office and as the port's custom house, a combined function common in American cities on the shores of Lake Champlain and other navigable waters in the early 20th century.
