U.S. Post Office, Lexington, Kentucky, circa 1905

About this postcard

The card pictures the United States Post Office at Lexington, Kentucky, a heavy stone Romanesque Revival government building with arched openings, gabled rooflines and a corner tower topped by a clock and flagpole; a few pedestrians and a horse-drawn rig appear at street level. Such towered federal post offices were built in Kentucky's Bluegrass towns in the late nineteenth century as combined post office and courthouse facilities. The view is a halftone reproduction of a photograph, typical of the penny view cards issued in the first years of the twentieth century.
