About this postcard

The U.S. Post Office in Lynchburg, Virginia, fills the corner view: a three-story light-stone federal building with a red tile roof, rows of sash windows, and a colonnaded end bay. An American flag flies above the roofline, and a large shade tree frames the right side of the street. Lynchburg, on the James River in the Virginia Piedmont, was a tobacco and shoe-manufacturing center. The building's classical stone front marked the federal presence downtown, and the post office served a city that had grown through rail and river trade. Like many federal post offices of the period, it was built under the Treasury Department's public buildings program, which gave mid-sized cities monumental classical offices; this one also housed federal courtrooms.
