About this postcard
A single-story white stucco post office with a red tile roof, arched multi-pane windows, and a central arched entrance carved with the words "UNITED STATES POST OFFICE." An American flag flies from a pole above the doorway, and a palm and a shade tree stand on the lawn. McAllen sits in Hidalgo County in the lower Rio Grande Valley, a town that grew quickly in the early 20th century once irrigation turned the surrounding brush into farmland for citrus and winter vegetables. The Spanish Colonial Revival styling seen here, with its tile roof and arched openings, was a common choice for Texas public buildings of the 1920s and 1930s.
