About this postcard
The United States Treasury Building fills the foreground, its long colonnaded granite facade topped by flags. The Washington Monument rises at the left, and streetcars, carriages, and early automobiles move on the street below. The Treasury stands at 15th and Pennsylvania Avenue, just east of the White House. Its central and east wings were built from 1836 onward to designs by Robert Mills, and it remains the oldest departmental building in Washington. The building managed the nation's finances, collected internal revenue and customs, and guarded a quarter-billion dollars in holdings with watchmen and alarms. The Washington Monument, begun in 1848 and completed in 1884, stands in line with the Treasury's south front.
