The Umpqua River fills the center of the view, its blue water reflecting the sky between densely forested slopes. Green mountains and pink-tinted clouds rise in the background. The river rises in the Cascade Mountains and reaches the Pacific at Reedsport, where it forms a broad bay; the South Umpqua joins at Roseburg. The surrounding timbered canyons and rapids made the Umpqua known for fishing and scenery, and U.S. 99 carried motor tourists through this stretch of Oregon.
