Uncle Tom, portrait of an elderly man, Southern Pines, NC, 1938

About this postcard

A seated portrait of an elderly African American man with a full white beard, wearing a tan buttoned shirt, a red neckerchief, and blue trousers. He holds a straw hat in his lap and a cane in his right hand, set against a green field and a blue sky with clouds. The caption "Uncle Tom" borrows its name from Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 novel, though the card shows a stock Southern figure rather than a scene from the book, one of Curt Teich's "Happy South Scenes" views of the region. The sender, signing himself Jim, wrote that "this part of the South is very pretty," a fair description of Southern Pines, a Sandhills town that grew up as a winter resort around its pine woods.
