Union Square with the Washington equestrian statue, New York City, circa 1905

About this postcard

A wide view across Union Square in New York City, with the bronze equestrian statue of George Washington on its granite pedestal at right, open paved plaza in the foreground, and the fenced park with trees and lawns behind. Trolley cars and horse-drawn carriages cross the square, and tall commercial buildings — including a large hotel-like block flying a flag — ring the park. The statue, modeled by Henry Kirke Brown and unveiled in 1856, is one of the city's oldest public monuments; the surrounding square was then the heart of the city's shopping and theater district.
