Union Station facade, Washington, D.C., 1909

About this postcard

The view shows the broad Beaux-Arts front of Washington's Union Station, with three tall central arches and long colonnaded wings facing a plaza busy with trolley cars, horse-drawn vehicles, a few early automobiles, and pedestrians. A monument or fountain stands in the plaza. The station opened in 1907, designed by Daniel H. Burnham as a City Beautiful gateway to the capital, and this card dates from its first years, when streetcars still shared the approach with carriages and early motor traffic.
