About this postcard

The monumental Beaux-Arts facade of Union Station dominates the view, with its long colonnade, three great arched entrances, and American flags above the roofline. The broad plaza in front is dotted with fountains, a few horse-drawn vehicles, and early automobiles, with trees framing the foreground. The caption calls the new station "the finest railway station in the world" and notes that the U.S. government built the white granite building with the Pennsylvania and Baltimore & Ohio railroads at a cost of $18,000,000. Designed by Daniel Burnham and opened in 1907, Union Station brought the city's railroads into one terminal, its concourse modeled on the Baths of Diocletian.
