About this postcard

Wide view of the United States Gold Depository at Fort Knox, Kentucky: a low, blocky granite-faced building with a stepped upper story, dark barred windows, and a central entrance, set on a broad green lawn with a curving drive. Two American flags fly from poles on the roof against a pink-and-blue sky. The depository was completed in 1936 to hold the nation's gold reserves. Its granite facing, narrow windows, and site inside the Fort Knox military reservation were meant to read as security, and the building quickly became a public symbol of federal strength.
