United States Government Pier, Jamestown Exposition, Norfolk, Virginia, 1907

About this postcard

A tinted view of the United States Government Pier at the 1907 Jamestown Exposition: two tall domed and colonnaded towers flank a lagoon spanned by an arched bridge, with a warship steaming in the foreground, a small excursion steamer at right, sailboats and gondola-like craft on the water, and an airship and balloon floating in the dark sky above a long range of exposition buildings. The Jamestown Ter-Centennial Exposition of 1907 was held at Sewell's Point on Hampton Roads near Norfolk, Virginia, marking the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Jamestown colony; its grounds mixed Beaux-Arts exhibition palaces with a naval and military emphasis, and the Government Pier area displayed ships and equipment of the United States government.
