About this postcard
The long colonnaded south front of the United States Treasury fills the view, with the Washington Monument rising at the left and American flags flying above the roofline. In the foreground, streetcars, horse-drawn carriages, and pedestrians cross the wide intersection. The Treasury's granite Greek Revival building, designed in part by Robert Mills and built in stages from the 1830s, is one of the oldest departmental buildings in Washington. The Washington Monument, completed in 1884, anchors the skyline behind it. The scene belongs to the first decade of the 1900s, when streetcars and carriages still shared the capital's streets.
