The view looks down a broad gravel drive that runs between rows of light-colored, red-roofed collegiate buildings toward a central arched gateway. Lawns and young trees fill the foreground, and the scale of the drive gives the new campus an open, formal air. The printed caption names the University of Chicago, founded in 1890 with John D. Rockefeller's support in Hyde Park. Its early quadrangles were built in a Gothic-revival style, with limestone walls and red tile roofs that match the halls shown here.
