About this postcard
The decommissioned battleship USS Texas sits in a slip beside the Houston Ship Channel at the San Jacinto Battlefield, its cage masts, turrets, and guns visible, with visitors on deck and a gangway at right. The tall white San Jacinto Monument rises against a sunset sky at the right. The Texas served in both World Wars before becoming a permanent memorial here after World War II. The battlefield lies about 18 miles southeast of Houston, where Texas won independence from Mexico on April 21, 1836. The ship was officially designated the Texas Navy and opened to the public as a shrine.
