Valentine card with three children seated on a large heart, circa 1908

Card type
Lithograph

About this postcard

A chromolithographed Valentine shows three small children perched on a big crimson heart: a girl in a pink dress holding a sprig of blossoms, a boy in a vest raising a green paper hat, and a girl in blue with a floral wreath in her hair. The heart is framed by a trellis of pink and white dog roses and gilt-outlined leaves. Such heavily gilded, embossed Valentines were typically printed in Germany and sold in the United States in the first decade of the 20th century, when the holiday's sentimental juvenile imagery was at its peak.
