About this postcard

A long row of whitewashed, arched wall vaults in Old St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, New Orleans, each niche decorated with wreaths, bouquets and potted flowers for All Saints' Day. The above-ground "oven vault" walls are typical of New Orleans burial practice, where the high water table made subterranean graves impractical. Old St. Louis Cemetery, founded in 1789 just outside the French Quarter, is the city's oldest surviving cemetery and holds the tomb of voodoo queen Marie Laveau.
