About this postcard
A man in a broad-brimmed hat and dark cloak sits with his back partly to the viewer, turned toward a young woman in a white cap who holds a glass. A large wall map hangs behind them, and light comes in from a leaded window at the left. Vermeer painted the scene around 1657, in the years of the quiet Delft interiors lit from a side window that define his mature style. Henry Clay Frick bought the picture in 1919 for his house on Fifth Avenue in New York, and it hung there among the old master paintings that became the Frick Collection, opened to the public in 1935.
