About this postcard

The view looks west from the Nelson Monument on Calton Hill. The clock tower of the North British Hotel rises above the rooftops, the Political Martyrs' obelisk stands at left, and a tall commemorative column appears in the middle distance; castellated buildings occupy the foreground. The Nelson Monument is a tapering tower topped by a time-ball, erected between 1805 and 1816 to honour Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, the hero of Trafalgar. Calton Hill, with its monuments and open outlook, has long been Edinburgh's favoured vantage point over the New Town and the Firth of Forth beyond.
