About this postcard

Elevated city view looking west from the Nelson Monument on Calton Hill, with the clock tower of the North British Hotel rising above the rooftops, the Political Martyrs' obelisk on the left, and a tall commemorative column in the middle distance; castellated buildings occupy the foreground. The Nelson Monument, a tapering tower topped by a time-ball, was completed in 1816 to honour Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, and Calton Hill has long been Edinburgh's favoured vantage point over the New Town and the Firth of Forth beyond.
